Nail in Tyre: Can It Be Repaired?

Found a nail in tyre tread? Don't pull it out. In most cases a nail in the central part of the tread can be repaired safely - but the location, size and whether you've driven on it flat all matter.

Nail in Tyre: Should I Pull It Out?

No. The nail is often plugging the hole. Pulling it out can turn a slow leak into a flat. Check the pressure and get it looked at.

When Can It Be Repaired?

Under British Standard BS AU 159, repairs are allowed in the central three-quarters of the tread, for holes up to 6mm, provided there is no internal damage from running flat.

When It Needs Replacing

Damage in the shoulder or sidewall, more than one repair close together, or internal damage from running on low pressure.
